GMDN Agency joins Joint Initiative Council to advance global health informatics

The Global Medical Device Nomenclature (GMDN) Agency is pleased to announce its membership in the Joint Initiative Council (JIC) for Global Health Informatics Standardisation.
This strategic collaboration underscores the shared commitment of both organisations to enhance international health informatics standards and promote interoperability across healthcare systems worldwide.
Deniz Bruce, CEO of the GMDN Agency, said: “Becoming a member of the Joint Initiative Council is a significant step forward in our mission to standardise medical device nomenclature globally. We are excited to work alongside other leading organisations in the JIC to drive innovation and improve healthcare outcomes through harmonised standards.”
The JIC plays a crucial role in fostering collaboration among international health informatics standards organisations.
Daniel Vreeman, Chair of the JIC, highlighted the alignment of objectives between the JIC and the GMDN Agency, he said: “The inclusion of the GMDN Agency in the Joint Initiative Council strengthens our collective efforts to advance global health informatics standards. Together, we can achieve greater interoperability and ensure that healthcare information is seamlessly shared across borders, ultimately benefiting patients worldwide.”
Both the GMDN Agency and the JIC are dedicated to the development and implementation of standards that facilitate accurate diagnosis, treatment, and patient care.
By joining forces, they aim to create a more cohesive and efficient healthcare environment, where standardised medical device nomenclature and health informatics standards work hand in hand to support global health initiatives.

The vision of the JIC is:
- To be an effectual and respected channel for communication, cooperation and collaboration between the representatives of global standards development organizations (SDOs) that address health informatics standards.
- To provide an effective means of identifying the needs of customers for collaborative work on health informatics standards.
- To meet these needs collectively through its members in a timely manner efficiently leveraging the most appropriate standards development resources.
- To achieve widespread adoption and use of harmonized health informatics standards, where a singular set of standards is recognized as addressing each health business need.
- To avoid the development of overlapping, counter-productive and counteracting health informatics standards.
